I am a former chef and I would say Hoki, Baramundi, grouper, green cod or snapper would be fine, halibut is a mild firm white fleshed fish, I used Hoki and Orange roughy alot in Singapore along with grouper.

I would say talk to your fishmonger and see what is on sale or the freshest, even slipper lobster tails can be used.

Lets start with halibut, first place a sliding egg sinker on your line
then attach a swivel from there tie on another 3ft of line then the hook of your choice (depending on bait selection and size)
best baits= 1.sardines 2.squid 3.anchovies

now bass
black sea bass= do not keep these there illegal, but heard there tasty......

White sea bass= definetly squid

calico and sand bass= sardines,chovies,squid,plastics (artificial bait)

First off, go for August. September can be pretty chilly here, think of it this way: we've had snow the first week of October. Besides, August is good fishing season. Homer is okay, but really all those things you listed can be done somewhere a bit more exciting, look into Kenai or Seward. Kenai has whitewater rafting, kayaking, great fishing, and lots of Kenai Fjord cruises fairly inexpensive that take you right up to glaciers, or nearby islands with tons of wildlife. If you want to go the other direction, head to Denali National Park. Denali is the best for camping, wildlife, hiking, and general scenery, not so much on the fishing though. Anyways, don't get so caught up in the outdoorsy stuff that you forget to look around. Anchorage is a pretty neat place to visit, and fairly historical with the few museums and old architecture.

Basically, just do as much as you can. Sometimes, living in Alaska is like living in three states at once, there's so much to do it's impossible to choose one track.

California halibut are a different fish than the Pacific (Alaskan) halibut. The best bait is probably live sardines or anchovies, or live squid when available. If you don't have live bait, I'd go with a strip of squid pinned on a plastic-tailed lure, worked along the bottom.

If there's no live bait for sale on the pier, use a little 3-hook bait-catcher rig to try to catch baitfish from under the pier.

With halibut, it's important that the bait moves, since they don't move around on the bottom much, and if your bait just sits there, unless it hits the bottom right beside the fish, the fish won't see it. Cast out and work the bait in.

Halibut lie on the bottom, but they prefer live bait, ideally sardines or anchovies. If you can't get those, use whatever you can jig up (small perch, smelt, mackerel). Use a sinker big enough to keep the bait on the bottom, cast out, and drag it in slowly -- since the halibut don't move, you have to work the bait past them.

The other possibility is a plastic tailed swimbait (AA or similar), on a 1 ounce (or so, depending on the water depth) head. Again, cast out and bounce it in along the bottom.

If you do get a halibut, remember there's a 22 inch minimum size (and fishing in shallow water, most of your fish will likely be short), and be careful unhooking them -- halibut have nasty sharp teeth and strong jaws.

Either of these methods is also a good way to get bass.
